Mayor John Thomaides
John Thomaides was elected as the 45th Mayor of the City of San Marcos on December 13, 2016.
Mayor Thomaides is dedicated to promoting a vibrant local economy, stable and safe neighborhoods, a high quality of life, a thriving downtown, and a sustainable San Marcos. He believes San Marcos' strength comes from the diversity of its people and the beauty of its unique natural assets including the San Marcos River and pristine green spaces.
During his first year in office, he presided over the hiring process of a new city manager and the passage of a citizen-approved bond package that will fund necessary public safety infrastructure and a much-needed city library expansion.
In October of 2017, Mayor Thomaides proposed two forward thinking initiatives: a Climate Action Plan to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and a plan for a downtown Innovation District, both overwhelmingly supported by the City Council.
Thomaides was elected five times by his colleagues to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem since he began his service on the San Marcos City Council in 2003. His focus on attracting quality jobs and growing our local economy has brought in dozens of new companies and created nearly 12,000 jobs over the past 15 years.
As a councilmember, Thomaides worked to transform San Marcos into a bicycle and pedestrian friendly community by introducing a complete streets ordinance in 2013. He spearheaded an Open Government & Transparency Policy, which was adopted by the City Council and recognized by the Texas Comptroller’s office. Additionally, Thomaides is the founder of the San Marcos Mural Arts Program, which was featured in Texas Town and City Magazine.
Currently, Mayor Thomaides serves as the city’s representative to the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO), and on the city’s Finance and Audit Committee. He has also served on numerous City Council negotiating committees to evaluate and recommend development agreements on behalf of San Marcos.
The Mayor is an active member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors serving on the Environment and Infrastructure Committees and the National League of Cities University Communities Council. Along with council members and staff, he has led lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C. to secure almost $100 million in federal funds since 2007.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Mr. Thomaides has lived in San Marcos since 1993 and is the Owner and General Manager of Alpha Pure Water Company. As the city’s self-proclaimed Anti-Litter Mayor, he enjoys river clean up events, hiking, tennis, taking dips in the San Marcos River, and cruising around town on his Vespa.
