Ed Mihalkanin - Place 3
Dr. Ed Mihalkanin was elected to the San Marcos City Council in a run-off election on Dec. 13, 2016 for a one- year term in Place 3, and re-elected for a three-year term on Nov. 7, 2017. He took the oath of office on Nov. 15, 2017. Previously, Councilmember Mihalkanin served on the San Marcos City Council from 1996 to 2000 and 2001 to 2006.
Councilman Mihalkanin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Texas State University with specialties in International Relations, Latin American Government and Politics, and US Diplomacy. He has taught at the University since 1990, and received his M.A. in International Affairs and Ph.D. in International Relations from The American University.
At Texas State, Dr. Mihalkanin has been a member of the Fulbright Evaluation Committee, the Presidential Level Scholarship Selection Committee, and a faculty advisor to Sigma Pi Epsilon, Pi Sigma Alpha, and the SWT Water Ski Team.
He has served on the Convention & Visitors Bureau Board and the Economic Council. He has also served San Marcos as chair of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Tourism, chair for the Tourism Product Development Committee, and a board member of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos.
Councilman Mihalkanin is an advocate for responsible economic development, education, affordable housing, and workforce development.
