The City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating July’s “Parks and Recreation Month,” by highlighting the selfless, passionate and essential work of park and recreation professionals who are providing services that are vital to a healthy San Marcos. A variety of activities are planned for residents of all ages and abilities, including Clue: Parks and Rec Edition and virtual activities.

“We are excited to be able to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month within our City by hosting a live game of Clue and providing virtual activities for all ages,” said Parks and Recreation Director Drew Wells. “It’s important for residents to stay healthy, active and engaged while following the state and local emergency mandates.”

San Marcos Parks and Recreation will celebrate Parks and Recreation Month with these activities:

  • Clue: Parks and Rec Edition – July 11 through 24, 2020. Clues will be hidden at Purgatory Creek Natural Area (Lower: 2102 Hunter Road), Ringtail Ridge Natural Area (1814 Old Ranch Road 12), and Spring Lake Natural Area (685 Lime Kiln Road) to help solve this crime. There are five clues hidden on the trails at each natural area. Game boards and additional information will be available on the SMTX Community Services Facebook page at
  • Virtual Recreation Centers – Links to recreation, leisure, education, health, and wellness resources are available at and

The San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department invites the public to learn more about the local park and recreation professionals and the essential services they provide. Staff will be featured on the SMTX Community Services Facebook page,, throughout the month.

Parks and Recreation Month is an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). NRPA encourages people that support parks and recreation to share their story, as well as why their local park and recreation professionals are important to them, with the hashtag #WeAreParksAndRec.

NRPA also encourages people to get creative throughout the month by participating in the Thank a Park and Rec Pro contest. Film a video thanking a parks and recreation professional for the services they provide and post it on social media using the hashtag #ThankAParkAndRecPro for a chance to win prizes from NRPA throughout July.
