[ARCHIVED] Bobcat Gives Back Program Collects Students' Donations

Bobcats Give Back Program

This summer, local students diverted 2,849 pounds of material from landfills through Bobcats Give Back. The sustainable move-out initiative was created to provide an outlet for gently used and unwanted household items throughout the community. The program encourages students to donate clothing, kitchen supplies, electronics, small appliances, and school supplies.

This summer, Bobcats Give Back successfully collected materials from 13 participating apartment complexes. All collected items were donated to local non-profits and businesses. Donations included:

  • 41% Clothing
  • 25% Food
  • 14% Household Goods
  • 13% Kitchen Supplies
  • 6% Small Appliances
  • 1% School Supplies
  • 0.4% Luggage items

"During each major summer move-out, apartment dumpsters are overrun with valuable materials," said San Marcos Resource Recovery Program Coordinator Heather Wooten. "By offering convenient donation drop-off centers, we hope to inspire students to rethink move-out by wasting less and donating more."

The City of San Marcos Resource Recovery Division hopes to expand the program next summer by bringing back the on-campus donation site and increasing the number of apartment site partners.
