The City of San Marcos invites the public to participate in an Open House to see the progress made on the Downtown Area Plan for San Marcos.
On Wednesday, October 12, the City will host a Downtown Open House at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E Hopkins Street, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. At this come-and-go event, residents will have an opportunity to participate in interactive activities and provide feedback regarding the Downtown Area Plan.
The Downtown Area Plan will help shape the future of downtown San Marcos by guiding decision-making on key topics important to the community. In June 2022, the City hosted a community workshop and online survey to gather residents’ goals and vision for downtown.
“We received a lot of great input and ideas from our community related to what they love about downtown San Marcos and what they envision for the future”, said Planning Manager Andrea Villalobos. “We invite the community to come see how these ideas are coming to life in the plan and to let us know if we’re on the right track.”
The community will explore and provide feedback on a variety of topics related to downtown, including historic and cultural character, multimodal connectivity, public spaces, streetscapes, housing, small businesses, and building design.
“Our community has expressed that they envision downtown as the cultural and economic heart of San Marcos where all community members are welcomed to gather, live, work, and enjoy the charm, walkability, and vibrancy of downtown”, said Villalobos. “We’re presenting recommendations to achieve this vision, and community input at this stage in the plan is an important step in bringing the vision to life.”
The Downtown Area Open House will include interactive activities, refreshments, games, and giveaways for attendees. For community members who cannot attend, all information and visuals will be available following the event at www.visionsmtx.com.

About the Downtown Area Plan: As part of the Vision SMTX Comprehensive Plan, City Council provided direction to create a Downtown Area Plan to take a closer look at the future of downtown within the larger citywide Comprehensive Plan. San Marcos’ existing Downtown Master Plan, adopted in 2008, is nearing 15 years old. The Downtown Area Plan process will create an updated vision for the future guided by community and stakeholder input with several opportunities to provide input.
