[ARCHIVED] Taxiway Reconstruction Project Underway at San Marcos Regional Airport

San Marcos Regional Airport Taxiway Reconstruction Project

A reconstruction project to replace Taxiway Charlie is underway at the San Marcos Regional Airport. The reconstruction project will include improvements to enhance safety through the installation of an upgraded LED lighting system, new signage and markings, and a total replacement of the taxiway pavement.

On Monday, January, 9, construction crews began mobilizing the area and demolition of Taxiway Charlie’s outdated pavement will begin soon. Once complete, the improvements will limit the risk of debris damage, ultimately enhancing the safety of taxiing aircraft, and allow pilots visual clarity when utilizing the taxiway.

“Taxiway Charlie has not been reconstructed since its original installation during World War II. Maintaining the airfield infrastructure is an essential safety component to daily operations,” said Vice President of Texas Aviation Partners Cassidy Berenato. “Since Taxiway Charlie has the highest traffic volume, we are excited to enhance the user experience of the pilots flying into the San Marcos Regional Airport every day.”

The $5,392,730 reconstruction project is funded with a Federal Aviation Administration discretionary grant issued by the TxDOT Aviation Division. The San Marcos City Council approved $539,273 from the City’s general fund to be used toward the project during the Regular Meeting on September 20, representing 10% of total costs.

“The City of San Marcos is thankful to our federal and state partners for their help in making this shared investment in airport safety a reality,” said Assistant City Manager Joe Pantalion.

The completion of the taxiway reconstruction project is expected in summer of 2023. To ensure daily operations remain uninterrupted and to minimize disruptions, aircraft will taxi along the movement line of Charlie Taxiway where the pathway is clear of obstructions and construction activity.
