San Marcos Named Among Forbes “2018 Best Places to Retire” has named San Marcos as a “Best Place to Retire,” alongside such cities such as Pittsburgh, Penn.; Athens, Ga.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Jacksonville, Fla. and Lexington, Ky.

“There is something in San Marcos for everyone, whether you are beginning your career or finishing it,” said Mayor John Thomaides. “We are proud to have been recognized by Forbes as a top place to retire.”

San Marcos was nationally recognized for its affordable cost of living, low rate of serious crime and its access to the San Marcos River and Texas State University. In its new list, Forbes picked cities by median housing prices, cost of living, climate, taxes and quality of life.

“San Marcos combines affordable living with plenty of sunshine and activity,” reports. The site noted the overall cost of living in San Marcos is 13 percent below the national average.

The city has also been recognized for its culturally vibrant, historic downtown, which hosts film festivals, wine walks, farmers’ markets, live music and events catered to residents of all ages and backgrounds.

San Marcos offers a wide range of housing options for retirees, including Kissing Tree, a new baby boomer-centric housing community covering 1,300 acres. The community is also known for its diversity and access to big city amenities while maintaining its hometown charm.
