[ARCHIVED] San Marcos Public Library News

Hill Country Trees

Thursday, Sept. 27

6 - 7 p.m.

Hays County Master Gardener Delbert Bassett will present an interactive lecture at the San Marcos Public Library on the predominate trees in Hays County: the oak tree varieties and ashe juniper, commonly known as cedar.

Bassett will introduce the physiology of trees and common tree diseases like oak wilt, the most destructive disease affecting oaks in Central Texas. Most of the tree mortality results from tree-to-tree spread through interconnected or grafted root systems, once an oak wilt center becomes established. Saving our oaks is valuable to our property and our heritage.

Bassett will also instruct on how to care for your valuable trees by proper pruning, an important aspect of tree maintenance. Although forest trees grow quite well with only nature's pruning, landscape trees require a higher level of care to maintain their structural integrity and aesthetics. Basset will teach the basics of tree biology so that you can avoid lasting damage or even shorten the tree's life.

Delbert Bassett is a founding member of the Hays County Master Naturalists and Emeritus Member of Hays County Master Gardeners.  He assists the Hays County Extension Agent with gardening and naturalist issues. Bassett is a retired Marine and a fourth generation Texan born in Marfa.

The San Marcos Public Library is proud to host free Master Gardener lectures every fourth Thursday of the month at 6 p.m.
