Adoption Center Closed Monday at Animal Shelter

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter’s Adoption Center will be closed Monday as shelter staff and rescue organizations work an influx of animals rescued as a result of a Hays County animal rescue case. The receiving/reclaim office will open from 3 – 6 p.m. for reclaims only.

SMRAS staff and team members with Animal Investigation & Response, a 501(c)(3) animal protection organization that assists law enforcement and animal control agencies with animal abuse cases, have set up a temporary emergency shelter for the animals. A number of the animals rescued from the operation remain at the SMRAS pending medical evaluations.

Animal Seizure

On Nov. 1 at approximately 2 p.m. the Hays County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 200 block of Towhee Drive in Buda to follow up on a service call regarding inhumane animal care.

Hays County Sheriff’s Animal Control Officers made contact with the occupants and subsequently discovered 161 cats and 15 dogs in various states of health. The occupants of the residence identify themselves as a nonprofit organization responsible for the care, custody and welfare of the animals.

The investigation is ongoing, and the City of San Marcos will provide no further information on the case. No photos or video will be allowed inside the SMRAS or the emergency shelter to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

All media questions about the case should be referred to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.
