San Marcos Police responded to an auto-pedestrian collision in the early morning hours of Tues., June 25, 2019 that resulted in the death of a 30-year-old woman.
At approximately 12:38 a.m., San Marcos 9-1-1 received calls for a major traffic collision where a pickup struck a pedestrian at the intersection of Aquarena Springs Dr. and Thorpe Ln. Responding units found a white female lying in the roadway unresponsive and not breathing.
San Marcos EMS and the San Marcos Fire Department were on scene and attempted to deliver medical aid, but the patient was soon determined to be beyond life-saving measures. The San Marcos Police Collision Investigation Team was called to investigate the collision.
The pedestrian was identified as Katherine Arcillia Morgan (nee Vest) (04/27/1989) of San Marcos. The pickup was a silver 2009 Chevrolet driven by Michael James Gorzik (11/10/1977) also of San Marcos.
Witnesses stated Ms. Morgan first crossed Aquarena Springs Dr., but then immediately turned around and walked into traffic. They stated the pickup had a green light and had no time to react to Morgan. Justice of the Peace JoAnne Prado responded and pronounced her deceased at approximately 2:00 AM. An autopsy has been ordered and next of kin has been notified.
Officers on scene detected no signs of intoxication or impairment from Mr. Gorzik and preliminary investigation showed he was travelling under the speed limit of 45 MPH. No criminal or traffic charges are expected to be filed in relation to this incident. This is the fifth traffic fatality in San Marcos for 2019.
