The Parks and Recreation Department maintains over 2600 acres of park land and over 28 miles of trails in San Marcos. The San Marcos City Cemetery is also under the facility management of the Parks and Recreation Department. The San Marcos River and the Blanco River run through San Marcos.

City Cemetery

The San Marcos City Cemetery, founded in 1874, is located on 45 acres at 1001 Ranch Road 12 in San Marcos. The cemetery is the burial ground for many Texas pioneers and veterans of wars dating back to the War of 1812. The cemetery is open daily for visiting, care of graves, and other appropriate uses from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during Central Standard Time, and from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during Central Daylight Savings Time. The gates are locked at closing time.
