Twelve Graduate from Latest SMFD Citizens Fire Academy

The Citizens Fire Academy (CFA), hosted by the San Marcos Fire Department, wrapped up on November 6, 2023, with 12 cadets graduating from the program. The Citizens Fire Academy is an immersive program in which members of the community get an inside look at the San Marcos Fire Department. CFA cadets gain classroom and hands-on knowledge on topics such as emergency medical services, special rescue operations, and hazardous materials training.

This year marked Class 10 since the start of the academy in 2010 after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The class was made up of citizens, elected officials, and staff from City of San Marcos. One of those city staff was Freddy Medina, Marketing and Media Coordinator with the Communications and Intergovernmental Relations department.

I applied for the CFA program because I wanted to do something outside of my comfort zone,” said Medina, “and ultimately, I graduated the program with new friends, invaluable fire safety knowledge, and a newfound appreciation and respect for our fire force.

The Citizens Fire Academy is a free, 12-week program that runs from August through November. Participants meet Mondays with occasional Saturday sessions. Applications for 2024 are not yet available. The program is designed for adults ages 18 and older, of sound mind and body. Applicants must live or work in the City of San Marcos and meet additional program criteria, including a criminal background check.
