The City of San Marcos and Texas State University are calling on volunteers to register for the 36th Annual Great Texas River Clean Up happening from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 6, 2021.
The Texas Rivers Protection Association started the event in an effort to clean all 90 miles of the San Marcos River including creeks and tributaries that flow into the San Marcos and Blanco Rivers.
People who have volunteered in the past will notice changes due to continued COVID-19 conditions in the area including elimination of a headquarters for check-in.
“We’re encouraging everyone to keep their teams to a maximum of 10 people, wear a mask, and practice social distancing,” said Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager Amy Thomaides.
To Participate in the Upper San Marcos Clean-Up:
Anyone interested in participating in the upper San Marcos River portion of the clean-up, between Sewell Park and Stokes Park, should select an available location from the watershed map available at http://bit.ly/GTRCU-MAP-2021. To Participate in the Lower San Marcos Clean-Up:
Anyone interested in participating in the lower San Marcos River portion of the clean-up, between Stokes Park and the Guadalupe River, should contact Tom Goynes at tomgoynes@mac.com for more information.
Keep San Marcos Beautiful will set up a staffed disposal area at 401 E. Hopkins Street between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. the day of the event to track the amount of trash that has been collected. Volunteers interested in participating in the weigh-in may deliver trash collected during the event to the site and receive a free gift for their service.
The 36th Annual Great Texas River Clean Up is made possible by generous donors including H.E.B/Central Market, Keep Texas Beautiful and the San Marcos Lions Club.
