[ARCHIVED] City to Host National Purple Heart Day Reception and Ceremony

NF - Purple Heart Day

On Saturday, August 7, the City of San Marcos will host a public ceremony and reception honoring National Purple Heart Day and celebrating the City’s designation as a Purple Heart City on the National Purple Heart Trail. The event will be held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3314, 1701 Hunter Road, beginning at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be served.

San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson will present a proclamation at the event, declaring August 7, 2021, as National Purple Heart Day in San Marcos. Retired U.S. Marine Corps veteran Micah Wright will also deliver remarks. Wright was awarded the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in combat, currently serves as a program manager at UT Health San Antonio’s Military Health Institute, and was the director and founder of the Tudor Corps veteran-to-veteran tutoring initiative at Texas State University.

The Purple Heart Trail aims to create a system of roads, highways, bridges, and monuments that pay tribute to men and women who have received the honor. San Marcos’ designation as a Purple Heart City follows a request from the San Marcos Veteran Affairs Committee, making the City the latest among jurisdictions in 45 states and the territory of Guam to receive the designation.
