Police Investigating Homicide at Apartment Complex

At approximately 2:22 p.m. on Sunday, November 28, 2021, the San Marcos Police Department responded to The Cottages at San Marcos, 1415 Craddock Avenue, in reference to a subject with a gunshot wound. Officers located one victim, 19-year-old Lavonte Craig Benford. Benford was not a student at Texas State University.

Justice of the Peace Jo Anne Prado pronounced Benford deceased at the scene. The Travis County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. 

Police are speaking with witnesses and working to identify a suspect. As of this release, no arrests have been made in relation to Benford’s death. 

Preliminary information gathered as part of the investigation suggests the incident is isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. This is the fourth homicide investigated by the San Marcos Police Department in 2021.
