[ARCHIVED] City to Host Public Ribbon Cutting for First Phase of Sessom Creek Improvements Project

Sessom Creek Ribbon Cutting

The City of San Marcos will celebrate the completion of Phase 1 of the Sessom Creek Improvements project with a ribbon cutting Tuesday, May 23 at 9 a.m. at the Red Bus Food Park, 801 Chestnut St. The public is invited to attend the event, which will include remarks from Mayor Hughson and a short walking tour of the improvements.

Phase 1 of the Sessom Creek Improvements project between N LBJ Drive and Canyon Road started in the summer of 2021 and was completed in May 2023. The City partnered with the Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan (EAHCP) to design and construct the natural stream restoration project to stabilize Sessom Creek, which has been degraded over time by fast, high volume urban stormwater flows. The project was designed to stabilize the creek banks and slow down the stormwater runoff to minimize creek erosion and reduce sediment entering the San Marcos River.

“We are excited to share the progress of this project with our community,” said Director of Engineering & Capital Improvements Shaun Condor. “We are proud of the innovative solution that was designed and completed using sustainable native materials and vegetation to address a problem that was ultimately impacting the San Marcos River. These upgrades will help stabilize Sessom Creek and protect the San Marcos River for years to come.”

Phase 1 of the Sessom Creek Improvements Project included removing an exposed wastewater main, storm drain upgrades, and stream restoration. The EAHCP funded approximately $1 million of the $3.2 million construction costs. The second phase of the project is currently under design. It will focus on improvements to Sessom Creek between Canyon Road and Canyon Fork and is currently expected to begin construction in the summer of 2024.
