[ARCHIVED] Shelter Awarded Custody of Animals, Placement Begins

At an administrative hearing on Thursday, Nov. 8, Hays County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Scott J. Cary signed an Agreed Judgement ordering custody of 175 animals seized last week in an animal rescue case in Buda to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter.

The process for placing the animals is currently underway, beginning with outreach to potential owners or the originating organization found to be linked to the microchips found in approximately a quarter of the rescued animals. Redemption of these animals will be conducted by appointment to facilitate proper process.

The remaining unchipped animals will be re-evaluated and made available for adoption or placed with a transfer partner organization. A significant number of the animals suffer from a variety of health issues and are being evaluated and treated by a veterinarian.

Hours of Operation

Due to the influx of animals and the care required, the shelter is open for adoptions and reclaims today from 1-6 p.m. The shelter will be closed Saturday, Nov. 10 to facilitate preparation of rescued animals for adoption, transfer and redemption appointments. Animal Protection will respond to emergencies as needed.

The animal shelter will also be closed to the public as usual on Sunday and on Monday in observance of Veterans Day.

On Tuesday, Nov. 13, the shelter will reopen from 1-6 p.m. for adoptions and reclaims. Shelter staff anticipate continuing modified hours for the next one to two weeks.

Found pets

The shelter is asking the public to please hold onto stray or found animals if possible and check back with the shelter next week to see if space is available. Also, they should post a FOUND Report and review LOST reports on our website

  • FOOD IS NOT NEEDED AT THIS TIME. The shelter has received a great quantity of dog food this week
