Engage with Your Local Animal Shelter!

In June alone, the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS) took in 483 cats and dogs and 53 other furry friends and wildlife! Dedicated staff, fosters, volunteers, and community partners scrambled to find places and homes for the pets. SMRAS encourages all community members to help solve our animal overpopulation issues by getting involved:

• Spay/neuter, vaccinate, and microchip your pets; keep up with the vaccinations and update the microchip registry if your phone number changes.
• Advocate for the shelter; encourage your friends and family to adopt from the shelter.
• Sign up to volunteer; there are a variety of options and there truly is something for everyone!
• Become an animal foster; keep a shelter pet for a short amount of time and try to promote its adoption in the public and among your network.
• Help keep pets out of the shelter and in their home with their owners; lend a hand or a few dollars when pets are lost, need medical care, fencing, training, etc.

SMRAS is the only public animal shelter for all of Hays County. It is a monumental task to raise awareness county-wide for a more responsible approach to maintaining a healthy and manageable animal population. If we all treat pets with the same loyalty and friendship they give to us, San Marcos and Hays County will be a more pet-friendly community.

WIC Outreach Back in Full Swing

WIC staff is ready to roll and is conducting outreach to local businesses and non-profit agencies in their service area.  While COVID-19 had outreach efforts on pause, the endeavor is again in full swing.  Pictured at right is Joanne Anderson, WIC Health & Nutrition Specialist in the Seguin Clinic, heading out to visit community partners.

At WIC, we recognize the important role moms and dads play in the lives of their children.  During pregnancy and infancy, we teach parents how to bond with their babies.  As families grow, WIC provides regular health check-ups, family breastfeeding support, personalized nutrition tips and counseling, healthy foods, and referrals to other needed resources.  All WIC services and food are free!
