COAD-SMTX Seeks New Members

The Community Organizations Active in Disasters (COAD-SMTX) recently formed in San Marcos and is looking for new individual and organization members to be a part of planning for the next disaster in town - be it freeze or flood, or any other future disaster.  

COAD-SMTX is a City-supported organization that brings together volunteer groups to assist residents in the event of a disaster. The group convenes throughout the year to organize and plan the deployment of community resources in an efficient and timely manner. Working group meetings are scheduled for October - see schedule.

"I believe the heart of this community is to be collaborative and cooperative with one another for the good of our neighbors, and the COAD-SMTX exists for just that reason,” said Monica Followell, COAD-SMTX Chair. “It is our hope that COAD-SMTX will effectively mobilize our community through education and prevention all the way through long-term recovery. San Marcos has the bones of valuable agencies, non-profits, churches, businesses, and citizens. The COAD is a way to pull it all together for the greater good.”

Pet Fest & Other Shelter Events

Pet Prevent A Litter (PALS) of Central Texas will host their 19th Annual Pet Fest on October 16, 2021, from 10a to 4p, to promote responsible pet ownership, shelter pet adoptions, local rescue groups, and most importantly the continued efforts to have all pets spayed and neutered and zero pets in shelters. Pet Fest is a FREE family-friendly festival that's designed to raise awareness as well as funds to help those in need to care for and fix their pets. The event will include kids activities, live music, dog races & contests, silent auction & raffles, vendors, pictures with live mermaid, kiddie train rides, bounce castle, $10 pet microchipping, and more! The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter's Clear the Shelter event on September 18 was a success with 61 total adoptions, including 34 cats/kittens, 24 dogs/puppies, 2 guinea pigs and 1 rabbit. 

Other Upcoming Events:

• October 22 (4-7 p.m.) - Zelick's Ice House (336 W. Hopkins, San Marcos) is hosting a Yappy Hour for the community to promote pet-friendly establishments. We will be there with adoptable pets! Stop by for a drink to support our pets!
• October 23 (3-6 p.m.) Paws on the Ground Pub Crawl in Downtown Buda - POTG is an incredible support for our shelter pets - they are responsible for our wonderful sun shades in the back play yards and have helped with countless behind-the-scenes medical care for our pets. This is a super fun bar crawl with 100% of proceeds going to our shelter. See more information about tickets and the event here.
• October 24 (5-7 p.m.) - Black's BBQ (510 Hull St., San Marcos) - We are partnering with Black's BBQ for a foster pup adoption event!  Please join us!
