San Marcos Discovery Center
The San Marcos Discovery Center (SMDC) serves as an interpretive center for the Blanco and San Marcos rivers, parks, and associated trails.
Specializing in native and adapted plant production and promotion, the SMDC hosts bi-annual plant sales and features certified wildlife habitat displays and demonstration garden beds to increase public education and awareness of native landscapes. Themed gardens include a certified monarch waystation butterfly garden, cacti, grass, shade, spiral/seedball, vegetable, and herb gardens.
SMDC offers public exhibits as well as a pet fish drop off pond. Many volunteer opportunities are available such as garden maintenance (Master Gardener/Naturalists approved credit hours), HCP river activities, and youth programs. The SMDC provides signage and maps to educate the public and hosts master composter courses, youth camps, and guided tree, bird, and bug walks.
